United Service Workers West voted to authorize a strike and protested outside the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank if Disney fails to rehire all workers. The security officers and janitors currently work for contractors who clean landlord and corporate tenant offices. Over the last 10 years, workers have gained health care benefits and increased their wages above.
Disney does not guarantee that the workers will keep their jobs or benefits when a cleaning service provider takes over next week.
SEIU United Service Workers West currently represents more than 40,000 airport service workers, security officers, janitors and other property service workers in California. There are more than two million members in North America.
Disney has stated that the 68 impacted workers have been offered comparable positions to their current jobs with Able Service, the largest privately held buiding services provider in the United States. Able currently services other Disney locations and has a collective bargaining agreement with SEIU United Service Workers West.
